Enhance 2015 Recap

Last Saturday, over 110 volunteers came out to help during the 7th annual YPW Enhance project. The Enhance Community Project is an annual community service event which focuses on enriching the Wichita area while providing YPW members the opportunity to give back to the community. This year, volunteers worked on enhancing the neighborhood North of Evergreen Park in Wichita’s Sixth District.

Nine homeowners benefited from this event as volunteers did projects on the exterior of each home to improve their curb appeal. Projects included, painting, deck repairs, fence repairs, gutter repairs, removal of debris, removal of weeds, and many other landscaping improvements. The homeowners expressed their gratitude explaining that these were projects that they were unable to do on their own.

Homeowner, Joe Robertson, shared his appreciation with us, “They are doing something I can’t do and I am awful glad that they are doing it. I used to do this all myself, I built the garage but I can’t do this stuff anymore. I think it’s been awful nice that you people will do this for me.”

The volunteers helping out on Saturday may have felt like complaining about the heat but instead they expressed how happy they were to give back to their community and make a difference by enriching the Wichita area. YPW Member, Scott Lunsford, explains “My favorite part about this experience is seeing the appreciation on the homeowners face and the gratitude of doing the work that they described as overwhelming.”

In addition to the improvements on the nine homes, volunteers also collaborated with ICT ARMY of Artists to create an art mural that displays on a wall near the pool at Evergreen Park. This mural was designed to be enjoyed by the entire community as it highlights the Kansas landscape and sculpture.

While the day was filled with hard work, the community and volunteers still were able to enjoy a community celebration that brought everyone together for food, games and networking in Evergreen Park. It was a chance for everyone to take a break and reflect on the big picture of this event. YPW Member, Chad Glenn, shared “I enjoy being able to get outside with a group of friends and help somebody out that couldn’t do it. Lending a helping hand and have some fun and camaraderie, that’s what it’s all about.”
YPW Members are already looking forward to helping more deserving homeowners next year during this annual large-scale community service project. What neighborhood do you think we will Enhance next year?
