Volunteer in Training Event Recap

Saturday, I volunteered with YPs at the 2012 Fight for Air Climb at the Cessna Stadium at Wichita State University.  The Fight for Air Climb benefits the American Lung Association, and raises money for the research, education and advocacy work to fight lung disease.
I was intrigued that the event wasn’t just a 5K run, but featured a climb. Participants could opt to run a 5K throughout the Wichita State campus, or a stair climb at the Cessna Stadium of either 43.7 or 110 floors, in memory of the World Trade Center for fire fighters. And a few people voted for both options, the 5K andstair climb.
The morning began bright and early, and we arrived chilled, but ready to work.  Volunteers had a variety of tasks, from setting up the 5K route, the climb, moving water to the water stations, or helping with registration. My assigned task was to help set up the route for the 5K.  Once we finished marking the path with signs, arrows, and chalk, the sun had risen and the climb was set to begin. Participants from all fitness stages and age were lined up, ready to begin. As the climbers passed the starting line, we were inspired to see the fire fighters begin the climb, as the Wichita Fire Fighters challenged the Derby Fire Fighters to complete the climb – in full gear, weighing around 60 pounds.
We cheered the climbers on, tracking first and second place, as they raced up and down the stairs. As the climb approached completion, volunteers moved to the 2nd portion of the event – the 5K. Volunteers were stationed throughout the route with water, to watch for medical emergencies and to direct runners.
The Fight for Air Climb was a great, fun event with lots of energy and enthusiasm, and everyone had a great time. Thanks to all the YP’s that gave their Saturday morning to help make this event happen!
