Along with everyone else, I hear how important it is to be healthy.   I hear that message least five times a week.  I also know a lot of people get tired of hearing it, but if you think about it, taking steps to live a healthier lifestyle has so many more benefits that just living a longer life.

This year, YPW has focused on planning more events with a health/fitness theme.  In May, YPs gathered at Title Boxing Club and found out that kickboxing may look easy but it is a serious workout.  YPs, including myself, gathered and learned firsthand about this intense workout that strengthens your core and burns up to 1,000 calories an hour.

Also in May, YPW had a Lunch & Learn event at the Downtown YMCA.  Becky Tuttle, the Director of Wellness Initiatives for Greater Wichita YMCA, gave a great presentation on fitWichita and the benefits of being healthy.

Tuttle explained, “The Mission of the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita is to promote physical activity and good nutrition for every generation living in the Greater Wichita Area through people, programs, and policies.  Through collaboration and partnerships, the Coalition’s efforts focus on making our community a healthier place to live, work and play.”

Everyone has their own story but it is important to find what really motivates you to be healthy and push through the excuses and struggles to get you there.  Once you find the motivation, you need the resources to accomplish your goals, here are a few healthy resources that you can find right here in Wichita:

Fitness

Along with all the major gyms in this city (Genesis Health Clubs, Greater Wichita YMCA, Planet Fitness), Wichita has many other ways to get fit.

Title Boxing Club – As I mentioned earlier, kickboxing burns up to 1,000 calories/hour!

Bike Paths – Riding a bike has major heart benefits and helps you achieve your weight loss goals.  Here is a link to access a map of bike paths around Wichita: http://www.wichita.gov/LivePlay/Bicycle/Pages/Maps.aspx

Yoga Studios – Yoga is a great way to strengthen your core and decrease your stress levels.

Healthy Eating

This time of year is great to go out and explore one of Wichita’s many farmers’ markets. Take some time to ask the vendors about their favorite healthy recipes to cook with their produce.

Cooking at home is a great way to eat healthier, but when you want to get out, the following restaurants have several healthy options on their menus (for more info on great restaurants, see our “Restaurant Gems in Wichita” blog):

You don’t have to wait until the New Year comes back around to start your commitment to living a healthy lifestyle.  Get out and start moving now and take advantage of all of Wichita’s health and fitness resources.
