Volunteer Experiences: Giving Back and Growing Together

According to the American Cancer Society, half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetime.

Founded in 1913, the American Cancer society is the nation’s largest community-based voluntary health organization. One of the many fundraising events our local ACS organization hosts is the Cattle Baron’s Ball. As one of this year’s Community Relations events, we decided to offer a volunteer opportunity that would expose us to a fundraising event that we may also have interest in attending in the future.

On May 3 the 2014 Wichita Cattle Baron’s Ball took place in the Kansas Star Arena. Eight YPs, dressed in their favorite denim and boots gathered to volunteer for the event. We started the evening off by escorting the VIP guests to their pre-party and then continued the night by helping with the silent auction, live auction and bid booth. We utilized a variety of skills and worked as a team to make the night run smoothly.

The auction items included things like bottles of high-end wine, tickets to the Ellen Degeneres Show, KU and WSU basketball tickets, and a four day hunting trip to a private ranch in Arizona. It was a late night that drew in an enjoyable crowd of about 750 people ready to donate their time and money to “Finish the Fight!” More than $152,000 was raised to help make this “Cancer’s Last Century.”

The eight of us grew closer as YPs, networked with some of Wichita’s high rollers, exposed YPW to many of the attendees and even recruited one new member!

The Chair of the event’s Volunteer Committee summarized the YP’s efforts by saying, “They got in there, rolled their sleeves up, took the bull by the horn and got done what needed to get done. In all honesty I could not have pulled the evening off without them.”

To find more opportunities to volunteer in the community, check our Volunteer Opportunities page or attend our Volunteer Fair & Mingle on September 18.
