Need for Speed

YPW Member Creates Air Capital Speedskating Club

Heather Bohrer

For just over three years, YPW member Craig Goodloe of Airbus Americas Engineering has been involved in organizing a short track speedskating club at the Wichita Ice Center.  Craig said, “In 2010, my good friend, Rob Davis, and I decided that we should try to grow interest in speedskating here in Wichita and become an officially-recognized club with US Speedskating, the sport’s American governing body.  We’ve achieved this, and the Air Capital Speedskating Club is the only club in Kansas listed on US Speedskating’s register.”

Since 2010, the club has navigated the US Speedskating system of certification for clubs and coaches to procure necessary equipment, increase the club’s weekly practice time from one to three hours and host training camps that attract skaters from across the Midwest.  The club has also grown from just two skaters to ten.  “With the help of many very good, very dedicated people both inside and outside of the Wichita Ice Center, and indeed, Wichita itself, we are steadily growing,” Craig said.

The club is currently preparing for its’ largest undertaking to date: hosting a short tracking speedskating competition on February 15 at the Wichita Ice Center.  The first competition of its kind in Wichita, the club anticipates the event will draw skaters from ages six to sixty 60 from Colorado, Missouri and Illinois, as well as local Wichitans.  The competition will take place at the Wichita Ice Center. The first race is at 2:00 p.m., and the competition is expected to last until approximately 6:00 p.m.   The competition is open to the public, and there is no admission fee.  Craig added, “We would love to see a big crowd to support our local skaters on February 15!”
